World’s Largest Volcano — and it’s an Aggie!

TamuMassifI missed this News & Prophecy update (subscribe to receive free weekly prophecy updates here) about the super-massive volcano that has been discovered close to Japan: Tamu Massif — as large as the state of Arizona! That’s even bigger than the one under Yellowstone, which is quite a monster all by itself.

I was going to make a joke about “Tamu” in the name standing for my alma mater, Texas A&M University, until I discovered that it isn’t a joke: The “Tamu” really does stand for my alma mater! It was apparently named that by Dr. William Sager, a professor with the Texas A&M College of Geosciences.

Though I don’t see any news of the volcano causing trouble these days and it is apparently in active, I wonder just how many of these powerful beasts there are around the world and what role some of them might play in the earthquakes and other geological activity we see in the Scriptures playing a role in the end times (e.g., Luke 21:11, Rev. 6:14, et al.)

  1. When one finds a volcano on earth almost the match of Olympus Mons on Mars, at least in base area (its slope is much, much less), that is truly “big” news. But so might be the worrisome rise of the Yellowstone caldera. I read of the potential effects of such an explosion and recall this unquestionably end-time warning from Scripture:

    (Deu 29:22 RSV) “And the generation to come, your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the afflictions of that land and the sicknesses with which the LORD has made it sick–
    (Deu 29:23 RSV) the whole land brimstone and salt, and a burnt-out waste, unsown, and growing nothing, where no grass can sprout, an overthrow like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and wrath–
    (Deu 29:24 RSV) yea, all the nations would say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land? What means the heat of this great anger?’
    (Deu 29:25 RSV) Then men would say, ‘It is because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,
    (Deu 29:26 RSV) and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them;
    (Deu 29:27 RSV) therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, bringing upon it all the curses written in this book;
    (Deu 29:28 RSV) and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and fury and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as at this day.'”

    Maybe we ought to write about this connection…

    My sister & her family live in Japan! I am going to have nightmares about this giant volcano;)! A lot of people evacuated today in Japan due to typhoon warnings they were hearing on the news, but my sister said it was not as bad as they thought. No damage-more like a little storm than a typhoon. Phew!
