Apparently, scientists in Japan have figured out how to “manufacture” beef from human excrement. The resulting “steaks” reportedly taste just like beef.
Did I really just write the previous two sentences?
File this one under the “Please, say it isn’t so” category. You can read about it yourself here at Yahoo! News, if you dare: “Japan scientist synthesizes meat from human feces” (warning: scatological euphemisms some may find unpleasant (or at least childish) are present in the article; and the video is worse, using coarse vulgarity in the scientist’s lab). If you don’t dare, I don’t blame you — I’ve probably already said more than you would like to know.
I can’t believe that I am writing about this, but I do believe it is newsworthy assuming it is not some sad hoax. I know that humanity has a hard time telling the clean from the unclean without help (cf., Ezekiel 22:26, 44:23), but this seems to bend all expectations in weird directions. If the current state of our society causes us to think that this sort of activity is necessary, I think the current state of our society needs to be reevaluated. We are so disconnected from the normal cycle of things–life has become so utterly unnatural–that “solutions” like this seem to be reasonable ideas.
I recall reading about promising technologies for extracting clean water from urine — something the earth is able to do, itself. But turning waste into “meat”? Without the involvement of soil, plants, and plant eaters (split hooved, cud chewing plant eaters, of course), I don’t think so. Actually, the correct phrase might be, I don’t want to think so.
Along with mankind making animal/human hybrid embryos in the name of medicine and science and treating human embryos as mere “material” to be offered to the great god Cures-N-Stuff, mankind is increasingly without a reliable moral compass to show him a direction or a trustworthy means of measuring whether the actions he can take actually should be taken.
How far we have fallen from the simple and beautiful world in Eden that we simply had to care for and manage properly that we might be cared for in return! And how far we’ve come, as well, since the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in terms of deciding for ourselves what is right and wrong — what is clean and what is unclean.
Food from human waste? I’m going with unclean.
