Turning human waste into food?

Apparently, scientists in Japan have figured out how to “manufacture” beef from human excrement.  The resulting “steaks” reportedly taste just like beef.

Did I really just write the previous two sentences?

File this one under the “Please, say it isn’t so” category.  You can read about it yourself here at Yahoo! News, if you dare: “Japan scientist synthesizes meat from human feces” (warning: scatological euphemisms some may find unpleasant (or at least childish) are present in the article; and the video is worse, using coarse vulgarity in the scientist’s lab).  If you don’t dare, I don’t blame you — I’ve probably already said more than you would like to know.

I can’t believe that I am writing about this, but I do believe it is newsworthy assuming it is not some sad hoax. I know that humanity has a hard time telling the clean from the unclean without help (cf., Ezekiel 22:26, 44:23), but this seems to bend all expectations in weird directions.  If the current state of our society causes us to think that this sort of activity is necessary, I think the current state of our society needs to be reevaluated.  We are so disconnected from the normal cycle of things–life has become so utterly unnatural–that “solutions” like this seem to be reasonable ideas.

I recall reading about promising technologies for extracting clean water from urine — something the earth is able to do, itself.  But turning waste into “meat”?  Without the involvement of soil, plants, and plant eaters (split hooved, cud chewing plant eaters, of course), I don’t think so.  Actually, the correct phrase might be, I don’t want to think so.

Along with mankind making animal/human hybrid embryos in the name of medicine and science and treating human embryos as mere “material” to be offered to the great god Cures-N-Stuff, mankind is increasingly without a reliable moral compass to show him a direction or a trustworthy means of measuring whether the actions he can take actually should be taken.

How far we have fallen from the simple and beautiful world in Eden that we simply had to care for and manage properly that we might be cared for in return!  And how far we’ve come, as well, since the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in terms of deciding for ourselves what is right and wrong — what is clean and what is unclean.

Food from human waste?  I’m going with unclean.

Disturbing and disgusting! To what depths will scientists descend? I’ve already seen another news item posted by a member of the Living Church of God which is in a similar, although not quite so sickening vein. Apparently Chinese scientists have synthesized a non-essential amino acid known as L-cysteine. This ingredient is found in baked goods – bread for example. Some of this artifically produced amino acid is used, but of it is taken froman inexpensive, but natural protein source. And that sourse is human hair. The article on this from which this information is taken can be read on http://www.naturalnews.com However bad we imagine what is coming next to be it is certain the future will be much worse.

  2. Were this on MY blog, it would be under the “Now I’ve Seen Everything” tag – a total irony, as our fellow humans keep coming up with perversities never before seen.

There’s some sad humor of a scientific breakthrough of this nature being portrayed as ‘environmentally responsible’ too. Where does that lead? Pardon the pun but anyone pooh poohing the idea should be regarded and labelled as an irresponsible citizen?

  4. Norbert: If I understand what’s driving the prophetic changes in the world correctly, as far as the predominance and abuse of one or another human thought process goes, you can depend on that being exactly the accusation made as such perversities of the natural order multiply.

  5. I’d never heard of Bear Grylls before, not having a TV. After reading the Wikipedia article about him, I wonder what it is he deems so worthy in his obviously insane mind that it must “survive” with his body at all costs. 😀

Thanks for unintentionally ruining my evening, guys. I may not be able to eat for another day. 😛

  6. (Isaiah 36:11 RSV) Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Pray, speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
(Isaiah 36:12 RSV) But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?”

The Masoretes found this so offensive that they put in the vowels of completely different words or phrases to direct the reader to use euphemisms. Apparently not even Ezekiel’s language was such a turn-off to them.

Somehow I don’t think this will seem to be such a good idea when the modern Assyrians make us do this – without technological help.

If they can recycle our waste, it’s only a matter of time before they start recycling our corpses…

  8. I won’t repeat the humorous version of that quote I read during the days this was hot news (involved a childish euphemism to good effect), but I think there is something to that thought, Rakkav. Wouldn’t such “recycling” be the environmentally responsible thing to do, after all?

Some asked, what depths will mankind sink to? Does this even need to be answered? First of all, yes it is sadly fellow man that is sinking to these depths, although I choose to refer to them as tyrants of a sub-human species. Any fellow human that makes it illegal to grow organic food and than attempts to ram GMOs and synthesized human waste down our throats is the purest evil here. Humans that openly choose, whether through fear or ignorance, to behave like “sheeple” and submit to this deserve what they get. Now either stand up and fight this or go and eat your GMO veggies and a plate of poop!

What are you thinking?
