Need help visualizing Exodus 19?

My congregations have heard me go on and on about Exodus 19, trying to paint a picture with my words of that incredible scene…

Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.

Exodus 19:16-19 (NKJV)

Then today, I came across these amazing pictures of the May 3, 2008 eruption of the volcano in Chaiten, Chile.  Looking at them, I could not help but think of this passage.  Check them out yourself by clicking on the link below — I have it keyed to photo number 2, but there are a total of 7, and once you are there you can go forwards and backwards to look at them all.  (I’d simply copy & paste them here, but they are the UPI’s property.)

Thanks for posting that image. Volcano’s are awesome and fearful as I lived near the foot of Mt. Etna for five months, but to realize God Himself would be in the fire and smoke is more than a human could deal with. Tremble would put it mildly.

Those are amazing photos. I’ve never seen anything like that before, with the lightning and thundering taking place around the columns of smoke. If the Chilean eruption and happening with it was even a fraction of the intenstity during Israel’s day…wow.

    Reminds me of Micah 1:3-4.

I can’t send you any photos, but I can recommend a track from LA MUSIQUE DE LA BIBLE REVELEE VOLUME 2: Exodus 20:1-17, in its original, extraordinary melody. One of these days I need to create a video (Hebrew, Latinized Hebrew and English) and put it on YouTube.

Maybe in the Millenium we will see actual film footage(maybe God has many such footage of Biblical events)of God and Mount Sinai. Why not?

I agree, Thinker. I’ve often hoped that in the practice of passages such as Isaiah 30:20-21, those who are reigning with Christ and teaching the masses in the Millennium will be able to show images and “clips” of scenes from the past, just as God gave visions to men. Seeing the real events, as opposed to actor-reenacted scenes, would be fascinating!
