Seven years later, another wake-up call

I was just musing today on the fact that seven years ago, 9/11 happened in the week before the Feast of Trumpets.  Like the bracing, ear-piercing noise of a shofar blast, it seemed to me to be a wake-up call to America.

This Feast of Trumpets, seven years later, I note that the week before has again brought another wake-up call in the form of our incredible financial turmoil and the ineptitude of the adolescents (to borrow a descriptor from the Wall Street Journal) we seem to have leading us in Washington.

Right after 9/11 there was an increase in church attendance and “God talk,” as would be expected.  But time moves on.  The snooze button is eventually hit, and the world goes back to sleep.  Interestingly, Reuters reports that many are turning again to religion as our financial woes deepen (see here; hat tip to CM).  Will they hit the snooze button eventually, too?

What will the next wake-up call bring?

Just some quick thoughts this morning.  I hope all of you have a wonderful Feast of Trumpets, and may the day pictured by this feast of the Lord (Lev. 23:1-2) — the return of Jesus Christ, the establishment of the Kingdom of God, and the beginning of His rule with the saints — come quickly.
