Religion seen as helpful candidate for unifying force in Europe
This morning, Mr. Don Davis passed along an interesting article from Christianity Today entitled, “EU Commissioner Stresses Need for Dialogue with Churches,” which had an interesting statement or two from the perspective of prophecy:
The EU Commissioner has told more than 60 European church leaders gathered for a recent conference on the future of Europe that European institutions need to be in constant dialogue with churches, faith communities and civil society to bring the people of Europe together.
The conference “Values, Religion, Identity” gathered more than 60 European church leaders from 28 countries in Brussels from 12 – 13 December.
Those who understand Jesus’ admonition to watch and who understand the role that religion in Europe will play in future events tend to take note of such developments. Those of us in the Church of God understand that the Beast of Revelation 17 represents a resurrected Roman Empire and it’s leader, while the Woman who rides the Beast is a great religious power who wields influence over that empire in a “marriage” of convenience – in a way, a grotesque counterfeit of the relationship between the true Messiah and the true Church. That marriage that will come to an end (at the end) when the ”cons” finally outweigh the “pros” (Rev. 17:16).
The convenience that such a relationship will provide, among other things, is unity. Daniel 2:41-43 teaches us that this final world empire before the return of Jesus Christ (v. 44) will be difficult to unify, being a mixture of “iron and clay.” It is religion that will unify this empire, and Revelation 13:11-14 tells us that the great false prophet of the time — appearing as Christ but speaking as the devil — will through wonders and great influence turn people to the Beast to worship it. It’s influence over “peoples, nations, multitudes, and tongues” (Rev. 17:15) will be the “glue” that keeps the iron and clay together long enough to accomplish God’s will in the end times.
So when a conference in Europe stressing “Values, Religion, Identity” takes place, one might want to take notice! Such things may just be the fancy-of-the-moment for an EU Commissioner or for some religious heads seeking a role where they fear they will be left without one. But a time will come when such dialogue will be more than fancy.
